"Vorties Sentenced to 11 years for Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm"

Released Date 3/25/15

Macon County State’s Attorney Jay Scott announced today that Rashean Vorties, 20 of Decatur, has been sentenced to 11 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for a daylight shooting that occurred December 1, 2014. Vorties entered a plea of guilty on February 17 to the Class 1 crime of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and was sentenced by Circuit Judge Thomas Griffith on March 24. Vorties will have to serve 85% of the sentence before he is eligible for parole. Assistant State’s Attorney Kate Kurtz, who prosecuted the case, requested the maximum sentence of 15 years.

On December 1, 2014, at approximately 1:00 PM, Vorties was involved in an altercation with the occupants of a van on the lot of Prairie Pantry, 1645 W. Grand, Decatur. As the van drove from the scene Vorties fired seven shots from a .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol in the direction of the vehicle.

“We take a hard line on senseless gun violence like this,” Scott said. “Thankfully there were two civilian eyewitnesses who did the right thing, provided information to the police, and identified Vorties as the shooter. Had it not been for them and the rapid response and thorough investigation by the Decatur Police Department, this violent criminal would still be walking our streets.”
