Domestic violence is an epidemic affecting individuals in every community, regardless of age, sexual orientation, economic status, race, religion, nationality or educational background. One in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime and an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year.
Domestic violence not only results in physical injury and psychological trauma but in the most extreme cases, death. According to a report released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, nearly one-third of female homicides reported are perpetrated by an intimate partner (Uniform Crime Reports, 2001). The consequences of domestic violence can cross generations since witnessing violence as a child is the greatest risk factor for passing on violent behavior from one generation to the next. Boys who witness domestic violence as children are twice as likely to abuse their own partners and children when they become adults.
Macon County has forged a system-wide Coordinated Community Response team that is committed to reducing domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The local organizations that collectively form the CCR team include: The Macon County State's Attorney's Office; Dove Inc.; Growing Strong; Lutheran Child and Family Services; Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation; Partner Abuse Intervention Program; Decatur Police Department; Macon County Sheriff's Office; Macon County Child Advocacy Center; and Macon County Court Services. Each of these agencies aggressively pursues progressive policies and together has forged system-wide collaboration.
It is the goal of the Domestic Violence Unit to promote victim safety and ensure the abusers are held accountable for their illegal and abusive behavior. Our office has a "no drop policy" which does not allow victims to "drop charges." Our office maintains sole discretion to pursue criminal prosecution if sufficient evidence exists to substantiate the charge, thus relieving the victim of responsibility. We encourage victims to contact us to discuss the case and address any concerns they may have throughout the process. Dove, Inc. Domestic Violence Program legal advocates can also provide information about Emergency Orders of Protection, counseling, emergency shelter, and other possible services.
